Virtual Hosting With PureFTPd And MySQL (Incl. Quota And Bandwidth Management) On Fedora 13

This document describes how to install a PureFTPd server that uses virtual users from a MySQL database instead of real system users. This is much more performant and allows to have thousands of ftp users on a single machine. In addition to that I will show the use of quota and upload/download bandwidth limits with this setup. Passwords will be stored encrypted as MD5 strings in the database.

How To Set Up MySQL Database Replication With SSL Encryption On Debian Lenny

How To Set Up MySQL Database Replication With SSL Encryption On Debian Lenny

This tutorial describes how to set up database replication in MySQL using an SSL connection for encryption (to make it impossible for hackers to sniff out passwords and data transferred between the master and slave). MySQL replication allows you to have an exact copy of a database from a master server on another server (slave), and all updates to the database on the master server are immediately replicated to the database on the slave server so that both databases are in sync. This is not a backup policy because an accidentally issued DELETE command will also be carried out on the slave; but replication can help protect against hardware failures though.

How To Set Up A USB-Over-IP Server And Client With Ubuntu 10.04

howtoforge - Thu, 2010-08-26 18:55

How To Set Up A USB-Over-IP Server And Client With Ubuntu 10.04

This tutorial shows how to set up a USB-over-IP server with Ubuntu 10.04 as well as a USB-over-IP client (also running Ubuntu 10.04). The USB/IP Project aims to develop a general USB device sharing system over IP network. To share USB devices between computers with their full functionality, USB/IP encapsulates "USB I/O messages" into TCP/IP payloads and transmits them between computers. USB-over-IP can be useful for virtual machines, for example, that don't have access to the host system's hardware - USB-over-IP allows virtual machines to use remote USB devices.

How to get Rosewill RNX-EasyN1 to work with Ubuntu 10.04

UbuntuForum - Wed, 2010-08-25 21:19
I did not come up with this How to but it works. I found it in the reviews on http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833166041
I'm posting it here so its easer to find

this applies to the Rosewill RNX-EasyN1 IEEE 802.11b/g/n USB 2.0 Wireless-N 4.0 Dongle (1T1R)

this was posted by Perl Monkey Bill on Newegg Customer Reviews
"If using with Ubuntu 10.04 there are two things you need to do.

1. Apparently Ubuntu 10.04 (the newest kernel) is presently having incompatibility issues with WPA (1), so to use this authenticate properly with your router you will have to set your wireless router to WPA2 ONLY (NOT WPA/WPA2 mode). Research on www dot ubuntuforums dot org or launchpad dot net slash ubuntu for updates to check if this has been resolved.

2. You have to blacklist the re2800usb driver in ubuntu (the wrong driver is claiming this hardware in the OS). To do this:
1. Open terminal
2. Type:
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
Then a gedit viewer will open
3. At the bottom of the file add a line:
blacklist rt2800usb
4. Save/Exit the conf file.
5. Reboot

I have used this on 4 wildly varying hardware platforms running Ubuntu and it has worked every time."

I hope this helps you
Dan

Using ATA Over Ethernet (AoE) On Ubuntu 10.04 (Initiator And Target)

howtoforge - Tue, 2010-08-24 17:28

Using ATA Over Ethernet (AoE) On Ubuntu 10.04 (Initiator And Target)

This guide explains how you can set up an AoE target and an AoE initiator (client), both running Ubuntu 10.04. AoE stands for "ATA over Ethernet" and is a storage area network (SAN) protocol which allows AoE initiators to use storage devices on the (remote) AoE target using normal ethernet cabling. "Remote" in this case means "inside the same LAN" because AoE is not routable outside a LAN (this is a major difference compared to iSCSI). To the AoE initiator, the remote storage looks like a normal, locally-attached hard drive.

Installing TOra and Oracle client (Jaunty)

UbuntuForum - Mon, 2010-08-23 17:52
In case anyone else needs TOra on ubuntu.

First, install Oracle client. Download the rpms for Oracle instant client, convert them to .deb with alien, and install with dpkg. You will need two Oracle rpms, the basic and the odbc. I also always get the sqlplus rpm as it is useful. Don't get the basic lite as it is not sufficient for use with either odbc or sqlplus.

See: http://www.gena01.com/forum/gena01-b...11g-on-ubuntu/

Second, set all necessary environment vars. Determine the actual install path of the oracle instant client (should be something like "/usr/lib/oracle/11.2/client" below) and set the value of ORACLE_HOME to that.

Example (from http://froebe.net/blog/2008/10/22/in...4-server-jeos/)
export ORACLE_HOME=/usr/lib/oracle/11.2/client
export TNS_ADMIN=${ORACLE_HOME}
export PATH=${ORACLE_HOME}/bin:${PATH}
export CLASSPATH=${ORACLE_HOME}/classes:${CLASSPATH}
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${ORACLE_HOME}/lib:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}
export SQLPATH=${ORACLE_HOME}/bin

Put this in some file that you will source before running TOra, like /etc/profile, or ~/.bash_profile, etc.

Third, fix libpq.so
TOra 2.1.2 requires libpq.so.4
My Jaunty install has /usr/lib/libpq.so.5.1, with a symlink for libpq.so.5 pointing to libpq.so.5.1
So, I just made another symlink, libpq.so.4, which also points to libpq.so.5.1 Seems to work, I've tested it by connecting to my local postgres install.

Finally, get TOra. Download TOra 2.1.2 rpm from sourceforge. ( I got the 32bit rpm for redhat el5) and convert it to .deb with alien. Install with dpkg, and voila, I had a working TOra install!

If Tora complains about missing .so libraries on startup, make sure your Oracle home, path, classpath, etc are correct. And if it's whining about needing older versions of stuff you have (like libpq.so) try the symlink trick to see if the newer .so libraries will work.

Hope this works for you.

Save files permanently during a guest session

UbuntuForum - Mon, 2010-08-23 00:55
Background

The guest session feature (package gdm-guest-session) lets you start a temporary guest account with restricted privileges. Basically all changes are automatically deleted when a guest logs out.

It's nice to be able to hand over the computer to a friend or colleague who wants to check their mail, for instance, without a need to worry about security. However, somewhere I think they should be able to save file(s) which a regular user can work at further later on. Fortunately I noticed that they can - in the folder /var/tmp - and I decided to let my guests know about that fact and share my solution here.

Howto

1. Create a dedicated folder

Even if it's possible to just use /var/tmp, creating a subfolder is probably a good idea.

sudo mkdir -m 0777 /var/tmp/guest-data

2. A script for the purpose

This script inserts a desktop icon with a shortcut to /var/tmp/guest-data and launches an info dialog:

Code: #!/bin/bash

# exit if regular user
if [ $USER != 'guest' ]; then
    exit 0
fi

# shortcut to the guest-data folder
echo '
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Persistent guest data
Name[sv]=Filer som bevaras
Type=Link
URL=/var/tmp/guest-data
Icon=folder' > $HOME/$(gettext -d gtk20 Desktop)/guest-data_shortcut.desktop

# make the info dialog window become on focus
sleep 2

# info dialog
zenity --warning --title='Warning: Data will be deleted' --text=\
'Please be aware that this is an Ubuntu "Guest session".
It means that your data will be automatically deleted,
and possible altered settings will be reset when you log out.

There is an exception: Files that you save in the folder
/var/tmp/guest-data  will be preserved.' Take these steps to install it:
  • sudo gedit /usr/bin/guest-session-mods
  • Copy and paste the above code
  • Save and quit the gedit window
  • sudo chmod a+x /usr/bin/guest-session-mods

3. A desktop file

Finally we need a desktop file that invokes the script at the startup of each guest session.

Code: [Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=guest-session-mods
Exec=guest-session-mods
NoDisplay=true Take these steps to install it:
  • sudo gedit /etc/xdg/autostart/guest-session-mods.desktop
  • Copy and paste the above code and save

4. Test

Now when you start a guest session you should see this info dialog:

Comments

No system files are changed, and regular users are not affected. Consequently, if you change your mind, and/or would it not work to your liking, this is all there is to remove it:
  • sudo rm -r /var/tmp/guest-data
  • sudo rm /usr/bin/guest-session-mods
  • sudo rm /etc/xdg/autostart/guest-session-mods.desktop
It's worth noting that this customizing approach can be applied if you want to display some other dialog and/or make other programs be launched at the start of a guest session.

I'll be watching this thread. Don't hesitate to post your questions or comments.
